Spallation
Neutron Sources have contributed to several notable advances in basic sciences,
particularly in the area of condensed matter physics, material science, life
science, chemistry, environmental science, fundamental & applied nuclear
physics etc. There is thus a growing worldwide interest in the development of
pulsed neutron sources especially those based on proton accelerators. The major
advantages of pulsed neutron sources are high peak flux, pulsed time structure,
low heat production in target for given peak power etc. Amongst the accelerator
options one can use LINACs or synchrotrons. Proton synchrotrons are compactor
and can deliver beams of short pulse duration with high repetition frequency. Centre for Advanced
Technology, Indore is currently engaged in the study of a 1 GeV proton
synchrotron for pulsed spallation neutron production that will involve a H-
ion source followed by a RFQ, DTL based accelerator stage to raise the proton
energy to 100 MeV which will inject into a 1 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron. A
beam power of 100 kW would impinge on a tungsten target and neutrons will be
moderated for use in the condensed matter experimental research. In this
context a CAT-KEK School on pulsed spallation neutron sources is planned at CAT
Indore. This will help in promoting a deeper understanding of various physics
and technology issues involved in the design and development of various
subsystems of spallation neutron sources. Around 15 scientists from Japan along
with experts from various institutes from India will be participating and
delivering talks at the school.
